Structure Fire Destroys Home
AVFD responded to a single story modular home in the Speedway area. The structure was 30% involved with heavy fire showing on arrival. Crews were able to make entry and cut the fire off at the room of origin. The structure suffered extensive heat and smoke damage throughout. No injuries to fire department personnel were reported. One occupant was transported to the local ER for evaluation of possible smoke inhalation and anxiety. Crews operated on scene for around 3 hours. Athens was assisted by East River, Pipestem, Oakvale and Bluestone Valley.
Mobile Home Transport Catches Power Line - Road Closed for Hours
A transport service moving a double wide mobile home encountered utility lines on the Athens Road pulling a an entire pole down and disrupting service and transportation for hours. AEP, Suddenlink, Frontier and the department of highways responded to help restore services. No injuries were reported. The highway was reopened several hours after the incident.
Oldest Building in Athens Burns
The oldest surviving structure in Athens was destroyed by a late afternoon fire - Monday, April 11. The building was believed to be the original post office, and later a church before being used as a home to several different families over the years. The cause of the fire is under investigation but has been listed as suspicious. The WV State Fire Marshall's Office along with the WV State Police are investigating.
